I want to help-- who should I talk to about Safe Motherhood??
Hi, I’m Angeline Martyn, Communications Manager for Americans for UNFPA.
I’ll be answering your questions about the crisis of materal death, and why we’ve chosen to focus on Safe Motherhood when there are so many important issues facing the world’s women.
I’ll be live online here on Monday March 3rd and Tuesday the 4th from 1 Eastern to 3 Eastern each day, answering questions and follow-ups.
So use the box on the right part of your screen to enter your question, and look below for the answer.
Thanks Diana, I couldn’t agree more. A living mother can help her child grow and evolve for sure, but the impact of the loss of a mother is even more cross-cutting. There are direct health costs endured by the baby and caregiver, loss of income and other economic contributions and added stress to families, coping with the loss of a mother. For the children, especially girls, their tends to be a negative impact on their education, growth and access to care.
What’s troubling to me is maternal death as a pretty clear indication of the de-valued status of women in society. If it was a man dying every minute in childbirth it would be a lot harder for me to believe that maternal death would go unaddressed.
I recently saw a PBS special with Maria Hinojosa about the issue of childhood marriage in the developing world. It seems to me that this is an issue that has a major effect on the lives of women, even before they get to the stage of worrying about childbirth. Why haven’t you [we] chosen to focus more attention on childhood marriage?
